Chestnut hair on me?

okay, so i'm really bored with my hair color, and want to change it. I've never dyed my hair before, and dont to permanently dye it. just semi-permanently. I've asked my friends, and they said that I should dye it a chestnut color. I'm still a little skeptical about how it would look on me. what do you think?

Hair I want:

Reply:Ok trust me with the Uggs, i have 8 pairs. Haha we have a uniform so theyre strict on shoes and i wear uggs with my skirts all the time. Um...get cream leggings or chocolate brown ones but never black or white. Black and brown are hideous together and white will make you look pale. Hope i was some help : D Email me if you have more questions
Reply:Try black leggings, or violet colored. Depending on what you plan to pair it with, you could wear much more with a black legging, but be also be more bold with a violet colored one!

Chestnut to Blonde?

Hi

I am currently a faded Chestnut colour and really want to go back to a white blonde with caramel (all Hi Lites) do you think i will have to have my hir stripped? I mean it isnt really that dark as the colour has faded alot, I will be going to a good salon so its not a home job...what do u think? will i be able to have it done in one swoop?

Chestnut to Blonde?
I always think that natural is best for a lady.
Reply:yh! dont worry i have got light blonde hair now when naturally im a dark brown and its fine you just have it done in one swoop and thats it
Reply:its better to stay the way you are. in my opinion, chestnut is way better than blonde.
Reply:as a salon owner, yes without doubt you can have it done in one swoop as you say, you could either have loads of blonde highlights put in to bring you back more blonde, or if it is a bit darker as you say and depending on how porous your hair maybe, in my opinion it propally better to have a whole head bleach or stripped as you say, then a toner applied after the highlights are put in, but i would be against doing that at the same time, and you have to remember that being a blonde is great, but you will need the up keep ie roots very six weeks

its difficult to give you a real answer without seeing your hair

but yes of course it can be done, and professional chemicals are not so harse these days, depending of course on the stylists who use them, welcome back to the Blondie club

and i hope you look fantastic, and love the caramel streaks idea its very much in fashion these days stunning
Reply:no dont do it stay dark it looks so much nicer and sophisticated
Reply:you'll probably need to have it stripped at a salon.

I went from dyed black, in March, to having blonde highlights in. Then last week, I had the whole lot stripped, and gone blonde all over......... am still in shock, as always been dark (am 48). It took almost 3hrs at a salon, and cost £65

you can find them in a lot of places, but cheap ones are hard to find. the more sturdy ones are around 250, but the more flimsy ones are around 150. I hav uggs and trust me, they are worth it. they're made out of real sheep fur, so that is what makes them so expensive.
Reply:Oh! I know i know :D Okay if you go to limitedtoo.com they have sand colored uggs...at least they did last time I checked. The website doesn't call them uggs, though, they are called "shorty boots". But don't worry they are the same. I don't know where to find chestnut colored uggs though but the sand ones are pretty anyway.

Chestnut pastries - any recipes?

My Nonna (Italian grandmother) used to make a pastry every Christmas that had a soft sweet pastry shell filled with a delicious, sweet, soft chestnut paste. Unfortunately she didn't pass on the recipe before she went to join my Nonno in the afterlife. Any suggestions please would be welcome,

Chestnut and Fruit Fritters

Ingredients :

2 med Apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced

1 cup Vin Santo or other dessert wine

1/3 cup Granulated sugar

1/2 cup All-purpose flour

1/2 cup Chestnut flour

1 x Egg, separated

3/4 cup Dry white wine

1 tbl Unsalted butter, softened

Vegetable oil for frying

Confectioners' sugar for dusting the fritters

Method :

Place the apple slices in a bowl and sprinkle with the Vin Santo and the granulated sugar. Cover and set aside for 1 hour.

Mix together both types of flour, the egg yolk, and the white wine.

Beat the egg white in a separate bowl until fluffy. Fold the egg white gently into the flour mixture. Drain the apples and mix gently into the batter.

Heat 1/2-inch of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat.

Drop a 5-inch round of batter in the skillet, cook until golden brown on one side, flip and cook likewise on the other side. This should take about 3 minutes (1 1/2 minutes per side). Remove, drain, dust with the confectioners' sugar, and serve.

Yield: 4 as a dessert or snack

Chestnut Dessert

2 pounds chestnuts*

½ cup sugar

¼ cup water

1 tablespoon vanilla

4 or 5 apples

1 tablespoon butter

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons apricot jelly

Blanch and peel the chestnuts and cook until soft, then rub through a sieve. Make a syrup of the sugar and water, add vanilla and chestnuts and stir until the mixture is smooth. Place in a ring on plate. Cook the apples until soft, mash them, add butter, cinnamon, and apricot jelly. Put this mixture in the center of the chestnut ring and garnish with preserved fruits.

Chestnut Honey Pears

SERVES 4

The comice pears called for in this preparation are widely available in the winter.

2 cups dry white wine

2 cups sugar

1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise

2 long strips orange zest

4 firm but ripe comice pears, peeled, halved, and cored

2 tbsp. chestnut honey

5 sprigs fresh thyme

4 tbsp. cold butter, cubed

Salt

1 cup vanilla ice cream

1. Combine 6 cups water, wine, sugar, vanilla bean, and orange zest in a large pot and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Add pears and poach until tender, 5–10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside, allowing pears to cool in poaching liquid. When cool, transfer pears to a plate. Pat dry with paper towels. Reserve poaching liquid.

2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until very warm, then add honey. Honey will bubble and foam, thinning out to coat bottom of the skillet, about 1 minute. Place 4 pear halves, cut side down, in hot honey. Cook pears until caramelized, shaking pan to prevent burning, about 5 minutes. Remove pears from pan and set aside.

3. Add 1 cup poaching liquid (with vanilla bean) and 1 sprig thyme to same skillet. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove pan from heat, whisk in butter, one cube at a time, then add a pinch of salt. Remove and discard vanilla bean and thyme and set sauce aside.

4. To serve, coarsely chop remaining 4 uncaramelized poached pear halves and divide among four plates. Place 1 caramelized pear half in center of each plate, then spoon sauce over pears. Add a small scoop of ice cream to each plate and garnish with a sprig of thyme.

Chestnut puree?

A recipe calls for a jar of chestnut puree. (NOT CANNED)

1.What is that?

2. What is it usually for?

3. Where can I buy it? (Somewhere local... like Walmart, Target, Abertsons... NOT Henry's, Trader Joes, online...)

4. What the price?

Chestnut puree?
usually nut puree's like that are used for baked goods like baklava and marsipan.... I believe you can find it near the almond paste probably in the baking section of your supermaket... I would try Walmart I believe the have a wider variety of products to offer... as for price.... I'm not sure, sorry! It's been a while since I've purchased it!

Roasted Chestnuts are then cooked with some type of fat like butter and/or milk and a couple of flavorings or spices. Depends on the intended dish.

2. What is it usually for?

Usually baking. Chestnut Puree is also an excellent accompaniment for turkey, fillet of beef, and lamb.

3. Where can I buy it? (Somewhere local... like Walmart, Target, Abertsons... NOT Henry's, Trader Joes, online...)

Check local gourmet groceries and health food storesl. You are unlikely to find it at a large chain department store.

I wouldn't rule out the quality of a chestnut puree based on the packaging. Some canned goods are better than jarred goods. Just depends on the maker.

4. What the price?

$5.00 - $20.00 + tax

Chestnut puree?

I have a tin of chestnut puree left over from Christmas,I don't really know what do with it,does anyone have any recipes I could use, thanks.

Chestnut puree?
The best thing for chestnut puree is to open the tin, scrape the chestnut puree into the bin, then wash and recycle the tin.
Reply:I've never heard of the stuff. But, if you go into some recipe sites and type in chestnut puree, I'm sure you'd find something.
Reply:Add to sausage meat , celery , onion , apple , brown breadcrumbs and the yolk of an egg use as a stuffing for turkey , pork or chicken it's bootiful.
Reply:Stir it into your sage and onion stuffing and serve as usual - or you could butterfly a chicken breast, spread with puree (or pureed stuffing) - re fold to original shape, wrap in bacon and oven bake for around half an hour...or you could use it to sweeten and take the heat off a homemade curry.

The possibilities are ENDLESS... you are limited only by your own imagination!
Reply:I'd spread it over Nigella and lick it off.
Reply:if it is sweetened you could serve it with ice cream

If not you could add corn syrup or honey and stir.

Chestnut horses more crazy?

Just wondering if there is any truth to the old wives tale that Chestnut horses are the craziest!

This question is just a bit of fun, I'm not after any nasty answers, just curious if anyone has had experience with this!

Chestnut horses more crazy?
That's just a color. Basically for every rule or wives tale I've heard, I've had a horse that broke the rule. I always heard Apps were wild eyed and hard to train, but two of the best horses we ever had were Apps, and mares on top of that. (And we are qh people...but those still were great horses.)
Reply:Yeah, I've had alot of experience with Chestnut horses. i use to own one myself (Sans King Son). He was not crazy at all he was rather calm and relaxing when being handled or when ridden, when i first got him after he turned 18 yes he was a tad bit hyper but nothing that made him seem like a crazy horse, he was only hyper because it had been about 2-3 years since he was last ridden. I've known King pretty much all my life so I've been around him since he was also young. And yes when he was much, much younger he was a wild stud but all young horses are that way til they grow out of it after their training begins. The only horses that I'm for sure that can be hard to handle, or "crazy", are abused horses, Paso Fino's ( and any other fast gaited horse), and horses meant for speed.
Reply:From what I've heard this is completely untrue, there's no reason why a coat colour should determine a temperament of a horse. But to be honest, from all the ponies/horses that I've met/worked with they've all been different and had their own personalities. It's pretty much like the old saying that redheaded ladies have bad tempers, and I speak for myself here, 'cos I am a redhead! :P
Reply:Their's a saying no bad color for a good horse it's true I don't own a chestnut but I know people who do and ttheir fine. I also think that the main reason shetlands act up is because they're 2 small for a trainer to ride and train so they never get proper training.
Reply:definitely not! those old wives tales are ridiculous, chestnut is simply a colour and nothing else! i have known extremely lazy chestnut horses. that is bull **** !

and no i am not blaming you, i just hate those "tales" that arent true at all

=]
Reply:Chesnut is one of the most common if not the most common colors of horses...so, even though it might seem that there are a lot of crazy chesnuts, it probably is just because there are a lot of chesnuts in general! :D
Reply:I've known chestnuts that were a little loopy, but they were all OTT TBs so that probably had something to do with it. When you stop to think about it, I bet we can all think of some rather "off" horses of all colors! I know I can...
Reply:I go by the eye thing, whites around the eyes, they are more fruitier.

My sorrel mule of my son's is the most steadfast mule we have. Followed by my red dun trail mule, then by my black bay show mule then my white eyed tricolored donkey.
Reply:Lol. I only know that my horse, a chestnut Hannoverian/Anglo-Arab mare, was quite a handful. But of course, that could have been the TB/Arab side of her coming out.
Reply:I always heard it was chestnut mares....

My horse is chestnut and he's not what I'd call crazy.

I think the truth is simply that some horses are crazy, same as some people and that sometimes they meet their match !
Reply:My family has two, and there very calm and relaxed most of the time. It could be because we trained them well. If your talking about wild chestnut horses this may be true.
Reply:no color has nothing to do with it....different blood lines are known to be..high strung, difficult, hard headed,loco.....other blood lines just the opposite
Reply:i have a chestnut thoroughbred, he is and absolute saint. extremely calm and sweet. very forgiving. ilove him to death
Reply:yes my sister rides cometetivley, Eventing.. she rides a chestnut, and hes exactly the same as her black horse.
Reply:My 1st horse was a chestnut and he was terrific. Little ponies (shetlands) are the worst! Bad case of "short man symdrome".
Reply:Let me check with my gelding.......No, he says he is perfectly sane....it is the rest of the horse world that is crazy.....
Reply:definitely not. I always thought it was white horses that were supposed to be nuts???? (by the way, they aren't either)
Reply:chestnuts are not all crazy i have two hestnuts and there perfectlyfine.
Reply:im not sure, all the crazy horses i've dealt with were roans and grays! =)
Reply:i honestly dont know~!~ i just got a chestnut mare and shes WILD! but i love her to death lol

Chestnut tree - Where to find images?

I can't find a picture of the trees in my garden, after posting a question relating to edible nuts or not in another new account, I've come back to my actual account to ask more.

Chestnut tree - Where to find images?
I just posted this on your other question but here it is again.

Good luck with identifying your tree.

The bark on a sweet chestnut tree is very distinctive, it twists around the tree and almost looks like lattice work. The tree goes very 'lumpy' when it gets old and the lattice work is not noticeable anymore.

This link will show you the bark.

The nut case is bright green and has lots of hairy type spikes.

Another link for you to compare with what you have in your garden.

Chestnut Uggs in Washing Machine?

I have read of people putting their Sand colored Uggs in the washing machine against Ugg's recommendation, but they have cleaned up very nicely. Obviously, I'd do it in cold water, gentle cycle inside a pillowcase, just to be safe. Has anyone tried this with their Chestnut colored pair? I am worried if I do this, the colour may run.

Chestnut Uggs in Washing Machine?
you cant...you have to spot clean it...i think. i wouldnt try it. try going on www.uggaustralia.com and getting the UGG cleaner...they have it there
Reply:My wife jumps in the pool with hers on a lot, and they haven't been ruined so far... Still in great condition... Just gotta keep em clean, and the chlorine helps.
Reply:I wouldn't risk it, it's probably safer to hand wash them. Plus, you would think the boots in the washing machine would be harmful to the machine. Hope all turns out well. Peace!
Reply:I haven't tried, but it may work, if you take care of them gently.
Reply:There is special Ugg cleaner and it gives you directions on how to care for them. You should not put them into a washing machine.
Reply:why would you attempt to put shoes, especially uggs in the washing machine...if they tell you not too...obviously they tell you not to for a reason...
Reply:NO! it will ruin them!!!
Reply:I would suggest against it! Water RUINS uggs. Just buy some of the spray-cleaner.

Can cats eat roasted chestnut?

I bought some roasted chestnuts, and my cat kept begging me for it, so I gave him a little piece. Now he's super addicted. The moment he hears me crack the chestnut opens, he comes running and begging. Is it safe to feed him chestnuts?

It's not crunchy, so I'm assuming it won't choke him or anything. I just thought it's a bit odd, and wants to make sure that it is safe.

Can cats eat roasted chestnut?
well its not in any way good for them, just like a dohnut is not good for you or me. and some people get addicted to dohnuts because they love the taist. its ok to give her one once in a while if she shows no sign of an alergy, but i wouldnt do it frequently because its no good for her and may make her digestive track screwy.

Kobayashi v. Chestnut?

I was sitting on the couch yesterday watching the highly entertaining, Nathan's hot dog eating contest and the 6 time regining champ is crying about "jawthritis" I believe he was faking!!! How does he eat 63 hot dogs without this handicap? It was hoax and Joey "Jaws" Chestnut beat him. But my question is, do you think that Kobayashi was faking about his jawthritis? Also tell me wheather you like Chestnut or kobayashi more. thx

Kobayashi v. Chestnut?
No, I do not think that he was faking. I think that it was reported before the competition that he was having jaw problems.

As for which one I like better, I am happy that an American (finally!) won this competition. But I admire Kobayashi for all that he has accomplished in this sport.
Reply:I don't think so. I've gotten a case of locked jaw before!

I prefer Kobayashi just because he's Asian like me. Heh, but congrats to Chestnut for winning!

American Chestnut Tree?

My family is in the process of getting my grandfathers house ready to sell. In the bathroom there are two stairs (American Chestnut) that lead to the bath tub that are in excellent condition. I was wondering if this adds value to house? Or worth mentioning to the realtor/perspective buyers?

The tree was one of the best for timber. It grew straight and often branch-free for 50 feet. Loggers tell of loading entire railroad cars with boards cut from just one tree. Straight-grained, lighter in weight than oak and more easily worked, chestnut was as rot resistant as redwood. It was used for virtually everything - telegraph poles, railroad ties, shingles, paneling, fine furniture, musical instruments, even pulp and plywood.

American Chestnut Tree?
The chestnut was decimated by a fungus, not a worm, and the fungus is still here. Many small chestnut sprouts can be found all over the east, but they die back pretty quickly. A new chestnut has been developed that is resistant to the fungus. It is 15/16ths American Chestnut and 1/16th Chinese Chestnut. It retains all of the traits of the American variety, with the added fungus protection. So the chestnut may be back in our forests again sometime soon.

And yes, it is worth mentioning that the stairs are made from Chestnut. It may or may not help, but it certainly won't hurt.
Reply:if they are removable take them off and keep them.....

they have sentimental value to you , not the new owners....
Reply:American Chestnut is a beautiful wood and is most often mistaken in antique stores for Oak. It will be difficult to find replacements (if someone is looking for Chestnut), but I have found some to repair some antique furniture that I bought a while back.

Depending upon the length and width of the stair treads, I might take them up and put down oak instead. There is always the possibility that some idiot, not knowing what they are, might just put down carpet tack strips and carpet over them.

As for me, since I do wood work, repair old furniture, and build things out of wood, I can always find a use for Chestnut. I paid $8/board foot for clear chestnut the other day to get a piece to replace a board on an old 3 drawer chest. That, I thought, was a deal because finding Chestnut without worm holes is a difficult task.

The Appalachian states are now in process of cultivating American Chesnut and if you drive through from the mountains of GA up toward the NE US, you might see one here or there. I saw one the other day in a state park in Georgia that was small, but beautiful.

I think, however, that the worm that got to them is still about.
Reply:Most definitely mention it to buyers, why wouldn't you? RScott

Glazed Chestnut. Can anyone tell me if you can make marrons Glaces with frozen Chestnuts?

Also what is the best kind of chestnut for that? and best recipe for it too. thanks

Glazed Chestnut. Can anyone tell me if you can make marrons Glaces with frozen Chestnuts?
The Euorpean Chestnut is most commonly used, althought most of them now are grown in China and Korea, as far as frozen chestnuts, go ahead, defrost them in the frig first,

The way to glaze them is the make a sugar syrup, 50%, 2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water, a little vanilla when you add the chestnuts.

Cook the sugar until it coats the back of a spoon or when you drop some in a cup of cold water, and the piece sets, then add the chestnuts cook until when you stir them the syrup again sets in the water. You can save them in one of those snaptop jars, in the frig. you can make a dessert called Mont St Michel, by pureeing the chestnuts and folding them into whipped cream.

We served this is a few of the restaurants I was a chef in, as a treat if this is not serve to children, add a shot of Frangelico liquer.
Reply:Ingredients

225g/8oz Chestnuts, blanched

¼ Vanilla Pod

270ml/8fl.oz. Water

450g/1lb. Loaf Sugar

Instructions

1. Peel the chestnuts (keeping whole), place in a saucepan , cover with fresh boiling water and a little sugar and cook until tender but not broken.

2. Meanwhile, place the sugar and water in a saucepan, bring to the boil and continue to boil rapidly without stirring, until the syrup just begins to discolor, at hard crack stage 150C/300F. Remove from the heat.

3. Drain the chestnuts well then dip them into the syrup. Leave for 5 minutes, remove them very carefully and place in a sieve in warm place (reserving the syrup).

4. The next day reheat the syrup and repeat the dipping and drying process.

5. The next day prepare the jars (see notes below)

6. Reheat the syrup once more, adding the vanilla pod and bring to the boil.

7. Pack the warm jars with the chestnuts, pour over the boiling syrup, cover seal and label (see notes below).

Notes: See also General preparations

Jars - Use jars which are free from cracks, chips or flaws. Prepare the jars by washing well in warm soapy water and rinsing thoroughly. Dry the jars in a cool oven (140C, 275F, Gas Mark 1). Fill whilst still warm.

Filling the jars – Fill with the fruit to within 2.5cm/1 inch of the top. Pour over the preserving liquid (vinegar, alcohol etc.) to within 1cm/ ½ inch of the top, making sure the fruit are completely covered with the liquid. Cover with a waxed disc (wax side down), Immediately place a cellophane disc over the top then cover with a screw top lid.

Store in a cool dark place.

Chinese Chestnut Tree?

I have a Chestnut Tree that is Five Years Old. It was a the only sprout in which this Tree produced. The Tree from which the sprout came from produces massive amounts of Chestnuts each Year. Why is My Tree not Producing.

Chinese Chestnut Tree?
The tree is not yet mature, number one; also it probably needs to be cross-pollinated with another chestnut tree.

Dying chestnut tree?

i think it is an american chestnut. the leaves look dry and wilty then they are all tuning brown and dead. any suggestions before this spreads to the other chestnut trees.

Dying chestnut tree?
American Chestnut trees are killed by Chestnut Blight, a fungal disease that was accidently introduced to North America about 100 years ago. Forests used to have many chestnut trees, virtually all were dead by 1940.

The blight does not kill the roots, so Chestnut trees will sprout from the roots and grow for a few years before being afflicted again. Some blight resistant cultivars of Chestnut have been bred and are available for sale in nurseries.

You will need to consult a professional arborist for definitive diagnosis. There are some experimental treatments available.
Reply:If it's on your lawn, don't cut the grrass right up to it, but leave a longer patch of grass around it. I'm not sure why, but it works.

And make sure you water it!

It also might be a fungus, so look around the tree for any signs of one. If you find a fungus, search on google what it looks like, and how to get rid of it.

Hope it helps.

I doubt that the mere fact that the wood is American Chestnut will increase its value but it might be used as an enticement to potential buyers by the way your Realtor spins the back story in their marketing efforts. At the very least, the fact that it is rot resistance should put buyers at ease when they encounter it so close to a water source.
Reply:I am not sure that the stairs will increase the value enough to mention. You can inform the agent to share the information with prospective buyers.

Sounds like there is a lot of history in the house, maybe you can arrange for the stairs to be removed and kept in the family?

Maybe repost this question in another section and see if you get a better response. Like hobbies, maybe there is someone that does wood working that can shed more light.

best of luck on the sale.

Use of horse chestnut/ being underweight can be just as frustrating !?

I was just wonderingif anyone knows about the use of hors chestnut externally. I have been given a cream by a herbalist while taking internally, ginger i read somewhere should not be taken with horse chestnut,i want to clarify this as i really need to take this cream. I am 23 years old and due to a long period of eating disoreder when i was younger i have what are some thread/ varicose veins at back of my legs and as a result i feel totally disgusted with my legs , proabbly more so than people complaining about weight , at least if i was over weight i could change it- but i not sure i CAN reverse something like that and i am only 23! so if anything will work this is it, but i been prescribed other herbs and not sure i can take horse chestnut with them,so if anyone has experienced using horse chestnut in a cream or had problems with thread veins and has had them treated herbally i would very much love ot hear your answers.also ANY HELP at all for people needing to gain!??

Use of horse chestnut/ being underweight can be just as frustrating !?
Imagine if ginger and horse chestnut were going to fix varicose veins. It would be a medical breakthrough. We could give gingerbread men to pregnant women to reverse their veins.

Chestnut trees in Chicago area or anywhere in Illinois?

Does anyone know where I can find chestnut trees in the Chicago area? City or suburbs? Which forest preserve? I used to pick chestnuts when I was a little girl, and I used to make little chestnut people, and it was so much fun. Now I would like to do the same with my toddler son, but I don't know where I can find chestnuts. Thanks.

Chestnut trees in Chicago area or anywhere in Illinois?
They are rare. They have found some in some New England woods. The trees were nearly 100% wiped out a century ago.
Reply:Only one place I know of...At the Mrton Arboretum in Glen Ellyn. They have one of a lot of rare species of trees that are not from around here. Normally they aren't grown here.
Reply:ok I had a remark about your chest nuts being better but I tried to delete it...lol sorry
Reply:What about Vermont. try some of the Nurseries there.
