I never had chestnut and want to roast them myself, any suggestions on how?

Instructions

STEP 1: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. STEP 2: Clean off chestnuts. STEP 3: Use a sharp paring knife to cut an X into one side of each chestnut, or prick chestnuts with a fork to allow steam to escape. STEP 4: Arrange chestnuts on a baking sheet or in a shallow pan, with the cut or pricked sides up. STEP 5: Roast in oven for 15 to 25 minutes, or until chestnuts are tender and easy to peel. STEP 6: Peel nuts when they are cool enough to handle, and enjoy.

I guess over an open fire, just like Nat Cole suggested. Being Italian, I know that chestnuts are a traditional Italian Christmas food, but I'm really not an "old school" enthusiast. I like them better raw, even though they are hard to peel. Whatever you do, don't put them in a microwave because they will explode. You might want to wrap them in foil, put them on a cookie sheet, and put them in the oven on low heat, about 175 to 200 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes until the shell cracks. That's what someone told me, and it works. When you roast them, the taste of the chestnut changes....it becomes sweeter, although I prefer them raw. I hope I gave you some insight.
Reply:First you put the chestnuts in water, so that when they are ready you won't have that hairy peel. Then make a cut across each chestnut and put all in the oven at 200 degrees. They will be ready in 30 minutes approx.

Reply:Answer #1 is it!

Also, I have put them into a paper bag and left them on top of a hot radiator for a while.... that also will work... I did not even make a hole for the steam to escape
Reply:Are you sure you want to do that? My god, I had roasted chestnuts before and almost puked. Something about a nut that tastes like chicken is disgusting

Reply:you MUST cut an X in each nut with a sharp knife or they will explode in the oven. Place in pan and roast for about 30 minutes(or till they start to split open is how I tell) till done....350 oven
